…if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins… – 1 John 2:1-2
The word propitiation here in the original Greek is hilasterion, which means mercy seat. This Scripture is saying that Christ became the mercy seat for our sins.
What was a mercy seat? When the children of Israel traveled the wilderness, they carried with them the Ark of the Covenant. The mercy seat covered the Ark. Each year the priest would sprinkle the blood of sacrificed animals on the mercy seat on the Day of Atonement.
Now, though, Jesus became the sacrifice for our sins once and for all. He became the mercy seat for our sins. We were already forgiven of all our sins at the Cross of Calvary, long before we committed them, long before we were even born.

Have you received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour? Do you believe Jesus died to pay the price for your sin? That He was raised from the dead? Then just pray aloud, “Lord Jesus, I repent of all my sins. Come into my heart and be my Lord and Saviour.” If you believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth, you are Born-again. Let us know if you prayed this prayer.
