Surviving Ourselves
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. – Matthew 14:29-30
A friend came over yesterday, wearing a shirt that read “Surviving Myself.” On the back was Romans 8:31, “If God be for us, who can be against us?”
All of our Christian lives, we are surviving ourselves. We are trying to take our eyes off ourselves and put them on God.
When our eyes are on ourselves, on our circumstances, we, like Peter, begin to sink (Matthew 14:30).
When our eyes are on God, again like Peter, we walk on the water (Matthew 14:29).
Like me, maybe we have a situation in our lives that we have approached from all angles only to fail at all the natural ways of solving it.
But have we tried looking to God? Tried bringing the problem to Him?
When we turn our lives, our problems, over to Him, we will see Him work on our behalves.
As we cast those cares on Him (Psalm 55:22, I Peter 5:7), we can be assured that God will perform all things on our behalves (Psalm 57:2).
