Who Can Break It?
And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt. – 1 Samuel 18:4
Jonathan took off his robe and gave it to David. They had made a covenant with each other.
What was Jonathan’s now belonged to David. What was David’s belonged to Jonathan. The exchanging of robes symbolized this.
When Jesus died on the Cross, He took our place. He took off His robe of righteousness and gave it to us. He instead took our robe of sinfulness and shame. He took our status as a sinner, so that we could take His status as a child of God, as being righteous. He took our punishment, all the wrath that God had toward our sin, and qualified us for every blessing from God through His blood.
Jesus fulfilled God’s part of the covenant, and He came to Earth as a man to fulfill our part. The covenant we have with God is so sealed tight that no one or nothing can break it…not even us or our sin.
